About
Immunizations and Infections

Immunizations and infections play significant roles in the prevention and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a leading cause of death worldwide. Infections, particularly those caused by pathogens like influenza, pneumococcus, and COVID-19, can exacerbate existing cardiovascular conditions or trigger acute events such as myocardial infarction and heart failure. For nurses, understanding the interplay between infections, immunizations, and cardiovascular health is essential for improving patient outcomes through prevention and management strategies.

Infections increase systemic inflammation, which can destabilize atherosclerotic plaques, impair myocardial function, and increase the risk of thrombotic events. For instance, influenza and pneumonia are well-documented triggers for cardiovascular complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults and those with pre-existing CVD. Nurses are at the forefront of recognizing infection-related complications in patients with cardiovascular conditions, ensuring timely interventions, and mitigating further risks.
